Co-Pilot for Website | Updates on Previous Announcement
Quote from chief superintendent on 2026-10-04, 10:04 amNot MS Copilot AI but Kevin McLarnon, now Co-Piloting this website with HI (human intelligence) having successfully flown us from Hostinger to DreamHost and a connecting one to Cloudflare for DNS. You may already recognise him as having improved and maintained our inferred RM Data Dictionary for the last 2-1/2 years. His report on the migration follows immediately below and, after that, see my update to yesterday's announcement.
-------------------------------Kevin's report--------------------------------
As mentioned in the September 13 email, we’ve been busy moving the SQLite Tools for RootsMagic website to a new hosting provider due to a larger than anticipated renewal cost. The site has been running on Dreamhost’s platform for the last two weeks while we’ve continued to make changes to the back-end email service. The goal is to better support the collaboration capabilities of the forum while keeping within the member-donated funding that supports the site. I am pleased to share that Tom is just as clever at finding creative, low-cost web hosting solutions as he is in writing complex SQL queries!Sqlitetoolsforrootsmagic.com now utilizes a free Gmail service for sending emails with a primary and backup path that, together, enable up to 1,000 emails to be sent in a 24-hour period. This email, combined with yesterday’s announcement, will exceed the limit for our primary service link, allowing us to validate the automated fail-over to the backup service connection. The current solution can more than meet our near-term needs. In the future, should anything become less than satisfactory with the Gmail service, other low-cost options can be implemented.Yesterday’s announcement highlighted recent Forum and Blog activity and provided details on how to subscribe to notifications. New tools that augment the capabilities of RootsMagic continue to be created and shared by members. We look forward to hearing about your challenges, solutions, and feedback.See you in the Forum.----------------------- Update to previous announcement -----------------------
This is the 2nd announcement to all members which is intended to test our setup for fail-over to a second Gmail account when the primary hits its 24-hour send quota. However, we had an unexpected temporary fail-over for what is likely a different reason yesterday which resulted in 39 recipients receiving that announcement from the backup (says from K McLarnon sqlite....ses@gmail.com). That is suspected to be due to a Gmail rate limit (~100 requests in 100s). Our email log didn't record them so I forwarded the announcement to them manually. My apology to you if you are one but it was good to hear back from those who confirmed receipt of the original.
The error is in How? Take your pick.
3. By email from a Groups.io relay of the Discussion forum RSS feed
That should read "By email from a Groups.io relay of the RSS feeds from Blog Entries and Comments and for new topics in the Discussion forum".
I've also realised that the RSS feed for the Discussion forum, whether direct or by relay, notifies only on new topics, not replies. It's possible that adding a feed from a topic will generate a notice for each new reply.
There should be no more all-user Announcements for a while unless something really exciting comes up. If you do not want to receive them, your only course of action is to unregister from the website by sending an email from your registered address to [email protected] with "Unsubscribe" as the subject. You may continue to get notifications through RSS.
See you in the forum!
