Exploit your RootsMagic family tree database with SQLite Tools
Applications that use SQLite with the RM database or operate on RM’s inputs or outputs.
The RMSplit C# program below allows you to create a group in RootsMagic5 which contains a selected person, their ancestors, and a selected number of “leaves” (collateral lines us a given depth). If you choose one leaf, you will get children of everyone in the direct line (and their spouses if that is checked). If…
Source code The following paragraphs are extracted from private messages from Tom, davistom1, who kindly agreed to their being brought onto a page for wider dissemination. He talks about the relationship between his RM4 database and media collection and two websites he operates, one a webtrees, the other GenWeb, both worth a visit. He developed…
As of 2012 and following the release of RootsMagic 5, a small team of enthusiasts is embarking on a software project to consolidate the various SQLite queries reported on this wiki into a user-friendly application, accessible to more RootsMagic users. Additional utilities will, hopefully, be added once the basics are running. The project team is…
I like this: RMtrix has a magical element to it in the sound alike to “tricks” with an appropriate implication as to what the software does – it carries out tricks on the RootsMagic database. Also can work as an acronym: RM obviously, tools or tricks, repairs, information, experiments or an algebraic unknown variable, x,…
This page is intended to stimulate some discussion about developing utilities for RootsMagic in a high level programming language. Please add your thoughts. Would you be interested in: using utilities that do things RootsMagic does not currently do? developing such utilities? testing? Development Platform? I had been setting up an old Borland Delphi 4 with…
As an external utility for the RootsMagic genealogy program, what would it do, how would it look? Initially, it would take the many tweaks and modifications discussed on this site and roll them into a format that is usable for the average RM user. Rationale There are a lot of general database cleanup or modification…
This page is intended to group existing SQLite queries and future functions under a menu structure that parallels that of RootsMagic itself, with the idea that similar naming, order and, possibly, locations on screen may facilitate user navigation to the utilities most relevant to their area of interest or concern. This is a first draft.…
I wanted to report some further investigations into my quest to be able to write the same query only once for use both directly in SQLite and again for MS Access, with hopefully not a whole lot editing required to make the same basic query work in either environment. On the issue of what may…
I have been running into some subtle little problems with queries and sub-queries that suggest to me that I don’t have an adequate understanding of the scope of names within SQL. To that end, I created the following very trivial queries to test against both SQLite and MS Access. — Test query #1 SELECT Z.PersonID…
(This is for the MS Access section of the Wiki. I thought I was putting it there, but it didn’t seem to go there. I guess I’m still figuring out how to work the Wiki. Jerry) I’m about to describe what I think is a useful approach to some reporting problems that are of interest…
